Ahrendts, one of Apple's highest-paid executives, arrived in 2014 as CEO of fashion retailer Burberry Group Plc.
During her tenure, the company redesigned its retail stores, focusing on the appeal of Apple as a luxury brand, and opened a location at a glass-walled store on Michigan Avenue in Chicago last fall.
Ahrendts has taken controversial steps, such as removing the formal Apple "Genius Bar" from stores to obtain technical services and establishing more leisure service centers. The introduction of "Genius Grove" potted plants at Apple's flagship store in San Francisco has sparked some complaints about customer service.
She has also reduced the number of outside companies that sell accessories such as cell phone shells in Apple stores and used the space for Apple's own, often more expensive, accessories.
Ten years after former CEO Steve Jobs hired Ron Johnson in 2000, when he left, Apple had a range of stores that the shopping industry envied, with sales per square foot comparable to luxury jewelers.
