European Union leaders pledged Thursday to British Prime Minister Teresa May that they would seek a new agreement with Britain by 2021 to avoid triggering the controversial Irish backstop.
"There will be no renegotiation," EU 27 leaders said in a joint statement on Britain's preliminary agreement to withdraw from Europe. The EU and British Prime Minister Teresa May reached a preliminary agreement to withdraw from Europe at the end of November, but then Teresa May asked the EU to give more assurances so that the British Parliament, which had different positions, could pass.
