Two U.S. traders said Chinese state-owned enterprises bought at least 500,000 tons of U.S. soybeans Wednesday, the first large-scale purchase since President Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in early December.
One trader learned of nine cargo transactions and said there might be more. Another trader with direct knowledge of these transactions said that Chinese state-owned enterprises purchased at least 12 ships and shipped them between January and March.
China is the largest buyer of U.S. soybeans, but since Beijing imposed high tariffs on U.S. soybeans on July 6 in retaliation for tariffs imposed on Chinese products, China has bought very little soybeans.
