Yngve Slyngstad, the chief executive of Norway's sovereign wealth fund, said it was bound to increase investment in China with other major global funds in the future, but the process could last 10 years rather than end in a year or two.
The fund is $970 billion, the world's largest, with more than 9,000 companies and about 1.4% of the world's listed shares. This makes its investment base very extensive, and its performance closely tracks the global economic situation.
But Slyngstad, in an interview with Reuters, said the fund's investment in China was "fairly small" with only about $25 billion.
"I think big index providers and big investment institutions will gradually bring China and Asia into their major indices, so big institutions like us may increase their investment here," he said.
"It will be a process that lasts for more than 10 years, not one or two years. But investment in China is sure to increase. "
Slyngstad pointed out that by comparison, US investment accounts for almost half of the fund's portfolio.
The fund, a major investor in the U.S. technology industry, expects companies whose core business is information management to be regulated.
Companies such as Facebook (FB.O), Google (GOOGL.O) and TWTR.N are worrying regulators in Europe and the United States about handling user data.
"I don't think the question is whether it will be regulated or not. The question is what form the authorities will take," he said.
"In democratic countries, information is definitely a sensitive topic. Who owns information? Who is allowed to make use of information and in what way? "
